The weather is warming up and the days are getting longer – it’s the time of year to start thinking about eating outdoors. Here are a number of suggestions to ensure your alfresco experience is an enjoyable one:
• Ensure your outdoor furniture is comfortable and clean. If necessary, throw some cushions on the chairs.
• Buy plenty of ice and keep drinks ice-cold. Have an ample selection of soft drinks, water and juices as well as alcoholic beverages.
• Keep the bugs as bay by using citronella candles and mozzie coils. Always have insect repellent at hand.
• Ensure there is adequate shade if you are dining during the day.
• Have a wet weather contingency plan, especially if you don’t have an under-cover outside area.
• Keep salads and cold foods cooler for longer by placing their bowl over a larger bowl of cold water and ice cubes.
• Use tablecloth weights to keep the tablecloth from blowing on windy days.
• Ensure there is adequate lighting if dining at night, especially around stairs and pathways.
• Avoid using food that spoils quickly if it is a really hot day, such as eggs and mayonnaise.
• Have everything prepared beforehand, otherwise you’ll be stuck in the kitchen and miss all the fun outside!
Here’s to a long hot summer!
