fruit of the month: berries

February’s fruit of the month is berries in all their diverse varieties: strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries to name a few!  They are at their best and least expensive right now, although many are available year round (often at a price).

Packed full of vitamin A, C and E, antioxidants and other nutrients, berries are generally bought in punnets. When selecting berries, ensure there is no excess juice in the bottom of the punnet and no signs of visible bruising or mould.

Berries are best enjoyed the day of their purchase, but can be refrigerated for several days. Always bring to room temperature before serving time, as refrigeration dulls their flavour.

Most berries don’t need washing, although strawberries can sometimes require a quick rinse. Always rinse before hulling and chopping or water will get into their flesh and make them watery. To learn how to prepare strawberries, see our click here.

Berries can be enjoyed just as they are, particularly at this time of the year when their flavour is at its best. But if you’re looking for some other ideas, try the following five suggestions:

1. Scatter fresh berries over a simple dessert like ice cream, yoghurt, mousse or plain cheesecake for a colourful and healthy topping.

2. Make a berry smoothie by combining milk, yoghurt, berries and a little honey in a blender.

3. Macerate berries in a mixture of equal parts of liqueur and sugar for several hours. An orange liqueur like Cointreau or Grand Marnier works really well.

4. Add a handful of fresh berries to your morning cereal.

5. Toss fresh strawberries or raspberries into a green salad to add a splash of colour and a sweet flavour hit.

  3. There is NOTHING like fresh berries. I know this sounds weird but it tastes like cheesecake I swear it…roll your strawberries in sour cream and then in brown sugar. Divine!!

  4. Wow justeatfood – that sounds decadent (but not as indulgent as cheesecake). I am going to try that for sure!
