Meat Free Monday is an international not-for-profit campaign which encourages people to go without meat for one day a week to improve their health and the health of the planet. It’s a simple way you can reduce your ecological footprint and reconnect with food that is nutritious and good for you.

There is an urgent need to reduce global carbon emissions to slow the rate of climate change and protect the environment. According to the United Nations, livestock production generates more of the world’s greenhouse gases than transport.

Meat is one of the most resource intensive foods to produce, using large quantities of energy, water and chemicals as well as the fuel it takes to get it to your plate. Between 50,000 and 100,000 litres of water is required to produce just one kilogram of beef; animal industries contribute over 30% of Australia’s greenhouse emissions; and the beef, sheep and dairy industries account for 92% of land clearance and soil degradation in Australia.

By reducing meat consumption by 15% (that’s one meatless day a week) you can make a real difference in the world. The more people who join in, the bigger the impact we can have on the planet – this includes preventing further habitat loss for Australia’s threatened wildlife.

Refraining from eating meat for one day a week is not only good for the planet, but good for your health. Most people, particularly Australians, eat more meat and protein-rich foods than they need to stay healthy. Eating a diet high in meat and low in plant-based foods is linked to a number of chronic medical conditions, such as colorectal cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Limiting your intake of meat while increasing your consumption of plant-based foods reduces the risk of chronic preventable disease such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes, prevents obesity and maintains health so you feel great inside and out. Meat Free Mondays is largely about helping us get the food our bodies need. With such a wonderful array of fresh fruit and vegetables available, there are plenty of other delicious alternatives to choose from!
